The Goodrich Lady Hornets will advance to the Regional playoffs in Round Rock after winning a tennis district championship in Kirbyville Monday.
Kristian James and JaVarius Nickelberry advance as district champs in mixed doubles. Jamariyaa Harrell finished second in girls singles, as did Denedra Taylor and Ashley Pierce in girls doubles. Jada Henderson and Jordan Landers received third place in mixed doubles, and Yasmin Andrade finished third in singles.
"They decided they wanted to do something in tennis this year," Goodrich Coach Ursula Hill said. "They have a competition type of attitude. With the competitive nature that they have, they really like winning and they like the results, so it doesn't take much to get them motivated. They have been doing it for awhile, but we have track going on as well right now, so we just split the time."
Hill said even she was surprised that the team performed so well, with very little work put in.
"It's something that we're learning and we don't really spend an adequate amount of time on," Hill said. "We competed against each other and when the district meet came around, we were ready to compete against other schools."
First and second place in each event advance to Regionals, meaning the Lady Hornets will be well represented. If they are able to advance to state, the meet will be held in College Station.
