Nederland charges late to defeat Big Sandy in tournament championship

 

SOUR LAKE—The Nederland Bulldogs overcame a 13-point deficit in the fourth quarter to force overtime and then won the final battle against Big Sandy to post a 57-50 victory in the championship game of the Hardin-Jefferson Marathon basketball tournament over the weekend.

(Staff photo by Linda Jacobs)The Wildcats of head coach Kevin Foster turned a lot of heads during the 3-day, 16-team tournament by posting big wins over state ranked Class 3A teams Kountze (#3) and Buna (#8) plus defeated Class 5A Longview and Class 4A Hudson and Little Cypress-Mauriceville before meeting up with the Class 5A Bulldogs in the tournament finale.
Big Sandy, currently 13-2 and ranked #1 in the latest TABC Class 2A basketball poll, had the Bulldogs up against the wall in the championship, leading by 13 points entering the final frame.
Running out of steam, the Wildcats went cold and scored just one point in the final eight minutes. Nederland answered with 14 points to knot the score 40-all and force overtime. The Bulldogs outscored the 'Cats 17-10 to win 57-50 and take home the top prize.
Big Sandy had opened the tournament Thursday with wins over Kountze 77-71 and Longview 61-55. On Friday, the Wildcats defeated LC-M 62-47 and knocked off Buna 80-49 in the first game of Gold Bracket play.
On Saturday, the Wildcats edged the Hudson Hornets 51-50 to advance to the championship game against Nederland, who had defeated Wylie East 51-47 in overtime to reach the tournament championship.
