Police offer $5,000 reward for Corrigan shooting suspect

corrigan-suspect-1A $5,000 reward has been offered by the Corrigan Police Department for information leading to the arrest and conviction of a suspect who is alleged to have twice tried to kill one of their officers.

During an Aug. 23 traffic stop, the armed suspect is wanted in connection with an attempt to shoot the officer and an attempt to run the officer down when he fled the scene in his vehicle.

The incident began about 3:17 a.m. on Aug. 23 when a CPD officer stopped an eastbound, dark-colored vehicle in the 1600 block of U.S. 287 in Corrigan.

The vehicle, which was reportedly traveling 77 mph in a 55 mph speed zone, was described as a dark-colored early 1998 to 2000s model Jeep Cherokee with a temporary license tag of 02D9844. The vehicle also was listed with damage to the rear and possible damage to the driver’s side of the vehicle. There was also a large speaker box in the rear of the vehicle.

corrigan-suspect-2The driver was described as being a Black man in his 30s to 40s, 5’07” to 6 feet with a mustache, chipped or cracked tooth who was wearing a yellow construction vest.

When the CPD officer made contact with the driver, the suspect told the officer that his driver’s license was in a backpack on the backseat behind his seat.
The officer told the man that he could get his license.

According to the CPD reports, after the driver got out of the SUV, he seemed to be very nervous, and when the officer was unable to see the man’s right hand, he told the driver, “Let me see your hands.”

At that point, the man allegedly pointed a hand gun at the officer and the officer told the suspect, “I said don’t move.”
The suspect is then alleged to have fired at least one shot at the CPD officer, who drew his own weapon and exchanged gunshots with the suspect.

According to the report the driver realized he hadn’t put the Jeep into park when it started moving down the shoulder of the road and he ran to and got inside the vehicle, making a U turn and then proceeded to side swipe the patrol car knocking off the mirror and sped off towards Groveton.

Anyone with information about the suspect or the brown or gray Jeep Cherokee is asked to contact the Corrigan Police Department at 936-398-2551, Texas Ranger R. Clendennen at 936-327-6836 or the Polk County Crime Stoppers at 936-327-STOP.

The suspect should be considered armed and dangerous and caution should be used when approaching him.
