LIVINGSTON – A man was struck and killed early Tuesday by a southbound Union Pacific train in an area behind the Polk County Jail.
Although witnesses indicted they believed the victim to be elderly -- possibly in his 70s -- details regarding the victim and the accident were not being released by the Livingston Police Department pending notification of the next of kin.
The mishap is reported to have occurred shortly after midnight Tuesday. Deputies at the sheriff's office in northern Livingston heard a loud bang and went to investigate. They found the train had stopped at the West Street crossing and began walking back along the tracks until they found the victim's body.
The man was pronounced dead at the scene by Pct. 1 Justice of the Peace Darrell Longino.
